Wat Phra Dhammakaya Dunedin Holds Candlelight Vigil for Earthquake Victims in Mandalay, Myanmar
On Sunday, 6 April 2025, Wat Phra Dhammakaya Dunedin, in collaboration with the Burmese community of Ōtepoti (Dunedin), as well as local residents and interfaith community leaders, hosted a candlelight vigil in memory of those who lost their lives in the recent earthquake that struck Mandalay, Myanmar, on Friday, 28 March.
The ceremony took place at the Octagon, in the heart of Dunedin, New Zealand. Commencing at 5:45 p.m. (local time), the event featured prayers and moments of reflection offered by representatives from various faith communities, including:
• The Buddhist community
• The Dunedin Sikh community
• The Hare Krishna group
• The Methodist Church
• The Hindu community
• The Baháʼí community
The atmosphere was one of peace, unity, and shared compassion, as attendees gathered to honour the lives lost and extend their heartfelt support to those affected by this tragic event.
